This was our submission for a selected competition for a major development in Nelson. It was conceived as a gateway to both Nelson and its port on a prominent corner site. The sun shading fins pick up the colours from the surrounding land and sea. Due to the soft curves of the building it will have an ever-changing dynamic to its appearance as you move around it, appropriate to its major crossroads location. It is designed to be an economic but highly sustainable project. The main structure is intended to be of engineered timber grown and manufactured locally in the Nelson region thereby supporting the local economy and sequestering carbon. Working with Isthmus, we designed a generous landscaped central courtyard and lanes that would be both an asset for the tenants but also contribute positively to the city with pathways through weaving the development into the urban fabric of Nelson.
